How It Works: Core Components
- Eligibility & Referral: Households are screened (income, priority status) and referred by shelters, social services, or other partners.
- Voucher Assignment: Eligible clients receive a subsidy (voucher) that covers part of their rent based on income. The subsidy travels with the household.
- Landlord Recruitment: Program staff recruit and educate landlords, explain guarantees, and offer incentives to encourage participation.
- Unit search & Approval: Anne and her staff find a rental that meets program and local housing quality standards; the unit is inspected, and the rent is determined to be reasonable.
- Lease & Subsidy Activation: Landlord and tenant sign a lease; subsidy payments begin to the landlord.
- Ongoing Support & Recertification: Case managers check in, help resolve issues, and periodically recertify eligibility.
Money Follows the People is a landlord outreach and tenant-based rental subsidy program that helps high-need households move into stable housing quickly. The subsidy follows eligible clients to the units they secure, while program staff support landlords and provide case management to promote long-term success. Want to know more? Ask Anne about it.
